A section of the Ōrongorongo Track at Jacob’s Ladder has been rerouted due to the risk of an imminent collapse. The slip cannot be seen from the track.
The reroute is well signposted. Turn back if you find yourself on a section of rough, uneven track with deep cracks. The rerouted track is a temporary tramping track with some large, unformed steps.
Jacob’s Ladder is the area where the track descends steeply down to the Ōrongorongo River Valley. This is about five minutes before the curved bridge when travelling from the Catchpool car park end.

Tasman Valley Road and the Hooker Valley Track between the first and second swing bridges will be closed from 5 pm Thursday 11 December until 12.00 pm Friday 12 December. Blue Lakes Track will also be inaccessible during this time.
While every effort will be made to minimise disruption, visitors may need to adjust their plans during operations. Work is expected to be completed by midday Saturday 13 December, however exact closure timings will depend on weather conditions.

There will be a helicopter boom-spraying herbicide onto wilding conifer regrowth in parts of a previously controlled wilding conifer forest on the western slopes of northern Beeby’s Ridge, south of the Motueka River, over one or two days from 17 November to 18 December 2025.
The herbicide ingredients are triclopyr ester, dicamba, picloram, aminopyralid, metsulphuron and ammonium sulphate, with added anti-drift oils. The target wilding conifer species are Contorta pine, Scots pine and Douglas fir.
Do not enter the area while a helicopter is operating. Warning signs will be in place at main access points prior to the work and will be taken down shortly after.
The sprayed areas will be safe to enter the day after the work is completed. The area is not near any walking tracks or huts.

Toxic ‘sausage’ baits containing 40 mg of para-aminopropiophenone (PAPP) were distributed by helicopter on 14 October 2025. Baits are approximately 10 g and dyed green.
Toxin warning signs are installed at all entrances to the block and will remain in place until the caution period is complete. This will be approximately 6-8 months following the operation.

The track between Gannons Road bridge to Montgomerie Hut and up to Kirwans Hut is now fully open with the flood/track damage repaired.

A section of the Ōrongorongo Track at Jacob’s Ladder has been rerouted due to the risk of an imminent collapse. The slip cannot be seen from the track.
The reroute is well signposted. Turn back if you find yourself on a section of rough, uneven track with deep cracks. The rerouted track is a temporary tramping track with some large, unformed steps.
Jacob’s Ladder is the area where the track descends steeply down to the Ōrongorongo River Valley. This is about five minutes before the curved bridge when travelling from the Catchpool car park end.

Jacob’s Ladder is the area where the track descends steeply down to the Ōrongorongo River Valley. This is about five minutes before the curved bridge when travelling from the Catchpool car park end.

A helicopter will be used to spray herbicide on individual wilding conifers on hills around Porters Hut, Porters Ridge and Red Hills Ridge from 25 November 2025 to 31 March 2026.
The herbicide ingredients are triclopyr BEE and biodiesel. The wilding conifer species being targeted (one-by-one) are mostly contorta pine and Douglas fir.
The work area is at least 50 m away from tracks, but people heading off-track – such as hunters, should take note.
