Windows Home Server

We are using Windows Home Server (WHS) to backup our PCs here. After using Allway Sync which worked well, but was manual, to backup our data to different machines it seemed time to get a more automated and central solution. At the same time use the server which always remains on to host the ftp and web servers.

On Home Server

• enabled WHS backup on all machines
• created shared folders on WHS for some data, eg Downloads
• changed the default WorkGroup name to this network's name
• changed WHS to have a fixed IP address
• upgraded WHS to Microsoft update(approve sites)
  • installed optional software updates for Server 2003
• installed Windows Defender
• using the Microsoft Web platform installer
  • installed Fast CGI for IIS6(approve sites)
  • installed PHP
• enabled http server in windows firewall
• installed Filezilla Server(approve sites)
  • transferred settings across from previous installation (FileZilla Server.xml FileZilla Server Interface.xml)
  • created shared ftp directory
  • enabled ftp server in windows firewall
• installed Windows Desktop Search
• trying out http://www.timetravelerwhs.com/Time Traveller(approve sites)
• waiting for Undelete for WHS(approve sites)

On Network clients

• installed WHS connector on all machines
• move My Documents to \\HOME-SERVER\Users\name

Installing PmWiki

• created a shared folder on WHS
  eg \\Home-server\home\mywebsite\
• installed or copy PmWiki website to
  eg \\Home-server\home\mywebsite\public_html\pmwiki\
