Morison Bush [1] [2]

We leave for Morison Bush about 6ish on Friday evening. We return late afternoon on Sunday. Morison Bush is a camping spot in a bend of the Ruamahanga River. (see pix, more, and gallery)

Accommodation is camping in tents. The main activities for the kids are swimming, kayaking, blackberry picking (in season), walking, and playing on the hay bales.

We plan to have a camp fire (conditions permitting) and have a barbecue or pasta for dinner on Saturday night and the kids can have toasted marshmallows for dessert. The camp site is a large flat area under Kanuka trees, adjacent to a large loop on the Ruamahanga river. It's a very relaxing spot, great for cricket, volley ball etc. There are no facilities, except a temporary long drop toilet which we put in.

Please bring, in a bag or pack, the following:

  • sleeping bag, sleeping bag liner, pillow, pyjamas
  • sun hat, sun screen, chap stick, insect repellent
  • gumboots, sneakers, sandals (will get wet) or jandals
  • waterproof parka, warm hat (it can get cold at night)
  • togs, towel, rash top
  • plate, bowl, knife, fork, spoon, mug, tea towel
  • drink bottle (full of water)
  • clothes to play and walk in
  • warm clothes including hat and trousers
  • toiletries: toilet paper, toothbrush, toothpaste, hairbrush, any necessary medication, etc.
  • torch, or better, LED headlamp
  • snow (closed cell) foam/sleeping mat
  • $5 per person per night for camping, $10 towards dinner, $10 towards transport
  • fish and chips money (Friday night) and icecream money (Sunday)

Food (not too much)

  • breakfast for Saturday and Sunday
  • lunch for Saturday and Sunday
  • fruit or a few snacks
  • we arrange dinner, and supply milk

You may also like to bring:

  • wet suit for swimming
  • sunglasses
  • camera

  • invite your parents and family to come too, they are most welcome

Please bring your own snacks and contributions to Saturday's and Sunday's breakfast and lunch. Dinner will be provided.

We have some basic rules for while we are there

  • if you go out of sight, tell an adult where you are going and when you will be back.
  • tell an adult before you swim
  • you must swim and kayak where an adult can see you
  • sunscreen and sunhats must be worn

See you there. Any queries just give us a call.

Morison Bush is a great time to catch-up with people. We always try to organise a great weekend of weather so come and enjoy a relaxing weekend in the sun lazing by the Ruamahanga.

A good option is to ride the Remutaka Incline(approve sites) enroute. There are no facilities so you need to bring full camping kit including drinking water. There will be a long drop kit supplied. Don't worry about reporting to the farmer as access has already been arranged for the group.

To get there follow SH2 over the Remutaka Hill through Featherston to Tauherenikau. Turn right off SH2 at the Tauherenikau Pub and continue to head east on to the gravel road. This takes you across to the Greytown-Martinborough road (substation on the corner). Just past here the Greytown - Martinborough road turns right and Glenmorven road is on the left. There is also a sign post "Ruamahanga River Access". Follow Glenmorven road past the wool shed, down the hill and out across the river flats until you reach a gate on the stop bank. From this gate our usual campsite is in the direction of about 10.00 o'clock just where the power line cross the river.

Look forward to seeing you there.
