Horowhenua extends from just north of the Otaki River to Himitangi, with the Tararua Ranges to the east and the Tasman Sea to the west. Centered on Levin at the intersection of state highways 1 and 57, small towns include Foxton, Shannon, and Tokomaru, and beach communities including Waikawa Beach, Hokio Beach, Waitarare Beach, Foxton Beach and Himitangi Beach.[1]

Horowhenua is administered by the Horowhenua District Council and promotes itself as the Nature Coast.
