Diamantina Drover

** "Songbook" Songbook.DiamantinaDrover -> Songbook.FullName ontrail

Performed: Redgum, John Williamson
(as sung by John Williamson on Mallee Boy)[2]

A few years ago I took a train ride up to Brisbane. On the train there was on old man of about eighty, he was a drover on the Diamantina River for about fifty years.

Capo 3
G D Em G D Em
G D Em
The faces in the photograph have faded
G D Em
And I can't believe he looks so much like me
Em Bm Am Em
For it's been ten years today, since I left for old Cork Station
Am C D Em
Saying "I won't be back till the drovings done"

Chorus
C G D Em
For the rain never falls on the Dusty Diamantina
Em G C C D
And a drover finds it hard to change his mind
Em Bm Am Em
For the years have surely gone, like the drays from Old Cork Station
Am C D Em
And I won't be back till the drovings done

G D Em
Well it seems like the sun comes up each morning,
G D Em
Sets me up then takes it all away
Em Bm Am Em
For the dreaming by the light, of the campfire at night
Am C D Em
Ends with the burning by the day

Chorus

G D Em
Sometimes I think I'll settle back in Sydney
G D Em
But it's been so long it's hard to change my mind
Em Bm Am Em
For the cattle trail goes on and on, and the fences roll forever
Am C D Em
And I won't be back till the drovings done

Chorus * 2
Am C D Em
And I won't be back till the drovings done
